Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

The Russo-Japanese War was fought during 1904-05 between the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan over their rival ambitions in Manchuria and Korea. The War began with the Japanese naval attack on Port Arthur, with major theatres of operations in Liaodong Peninsula and Mukden in Southern Manchuria, and the seas around Korea, Japan and the Yellow Sea.

This war held great international significance, as it was the first major military victory in the 20th Century in which an Asian power defeated one of Europe's greater powers.
