The Francis Wayland Hanawalt Teaching Notebooks consist of four small notebooks and one document created by Professor Francis Wayland Hanawalt. Two of the notebooks contain examination questions for courses he taught: mathematics, astronomy, engineering, surveying, and investment. The remaining two notebooks contain surveying data for the new campus site of the College of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington.

Francis Wayland Hanawalt (1859-1933) was born in Monticello, Indiana. He earned a B.A. from DePauw University in 1884; and did post-graduate work at the University of Chicago and Cornell University before earning a M.A. from DePauw University in 1902. Prior to joining the University of Puget Sound Hanawalt held positions in the Department of Mathematics and Astronomy at Mt. Morris College, 1884-1893; Instructor of Mathematics at DePauw University, 1893-1898; Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy at Iowa Wesleyan University, 1898-1903; Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy at Albion College, 1904-1908. Hanawalt joined the University of Puget Sound in 1908 as Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy and served in this position until his death in November 1933.
