Biographical NoteReturn to Top
The Pacific Northwest Association of the Amateur Athletic Union was created following the popularity of the 1891 football games between the Tacoma Athletic Club and the Multnomah Amateur Athletic Club in 1892 by William B. Goodwin, organizer of the Seattle Athletic Club, who merged the three groups under one name. William, previously a standout of Yale’s track and field, was responsible for bringing football to the University of Washington in 1889 and wanted more competitive teams for the University to train against. Each year after its formation, the association would name a football champion after each team competed against each other in a round-robin tournament. Its popularity saw a sharp rise when the association doubled in size after two years, recruiting more college teams to compete in its tournaments. It has since fallen under the Amateur Athletic Union, a non-profit sports organization that spans the entire United States and covers all sports. -
