Biographical NoteReturn to Top

David Evans Burt was born to Morris E. and Wanda L. Burt in Concord, California, on September 10, 1927. He attended junior high and high school in Fullerton, California, and then moved to Missoula, Montana, where he attended Montana State University (now called the University of Montana) from 1945-1947. During the summer of 1947 Burt joined the United States Forest Service smokejumpers in Missoula, under the direction of Earl Cooley. He jumped from the Missoula Base from 1947 through 1950.

Burt worked in many fields during his life, primarily as a laborer. By 1956 he listed his occupation as professional parachutist. In 1959 he co-founded Para Ventures, and later served as a Vice President and General Manager of Parachutist Associates, Inc., both out of Hollywood, California. Dave Burt died on July 23, 1975.

This collection contains two documents with biographical information about Dave Burt and three scrapbooks of newspaper clippings and photographs documenting smokejumping activities from 1947-1951. The scrapbooks are numbered 2, 3 and 7. The location of other scrapbooks that might have been associated with these is unknown.

This collection was given to board members of the National Smokejumper Association by an unknown individual for deposit in an archival repository.

Acquisition Information

This collection was transferred to the University of Montana from Eastern Washington University in 2018.

Processing Note

Scrapbook pages are brittle. Photographs and clippings were retained in their original locations within the scrapbooks. Biographical information was placed into a single folder during processing.

Cover title reads: Smokejumpers Book no. 2. Contents include clippings about smokejumping from a variety of magazines. Photographs depict smokejumpers, aircraft, jumpers in gear and repairing parachutes, and jumpers training, especially at the Missoula base. Individuals identified in photographs include Earl Cooley, Gene Little, Richard Denison, Jim Waite, Ted Dethlefs, Chuck Burk, Wayne Rusk and a number of men identified only by their first names. Among the areas identified are Nine Mile training facility, Six Mile field and Moose Creek.
