Biographical NoteReturn to Top
F. Jay Haynes (1853-1921) grew up in Saline, Michigan. He worked for the studio of S.C. Graham in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin before opening his own studio in 1876 in Moorhead, Minnesota. He made a name for himself taking photographs of the great bonanza farms of the late 1870s for the Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1879 he moved his operation to Fargo, North Dakota, and in 1881 he made his first trip to Yellowstone National Park. Thereafter he made yearly summer trips to Yellowstone and printed out his images in North Dakota and, after 1889, in St. Paul, Minnesota during the winter. Hayes remained, essentially, the official photographer for Yellowstone as well as a conssessionair until 1916 when the park consolidated concessions and his son, Jack Ellis Haynes took over the operation.
