Sergeant Fred E. Server Merrill G. Burlingame of the 2nd Calvary at Fort Ellis, Montana Territory, kept this daily diary during the expedition of Lieutenant Gustavus Cheyney Doane to survey source of the Snake River near Yellowstone Lake and trace it to its mouth on the Columbia River. The expedition which began from Fort Ellis Montana lasted from October 11, 1876 to February 2, 1877. When they arrived at Fort Hall, Idaho the expedition was cancelled and the troops were ordered back to Fort Ellis.

Entries consist of the daily observations of Sergeant Server during this surveying expedition which include the weather conditions, times of travel, any special circumstances or problems and the miles traveled. The hand written entries in pencil cover the dates of October 11, 1876 to February 2, 1877 when they arrived back at Fort Ellis. Two typed transcriptions are included in a second folder for patron use.
