Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Earl Hawley Robinson (1910-1991) was a composer and musician. Both his performances and his compositions were influenced by folk music. He was born in Seattle in 1910, and attended the University of Washington, graduating in 1933 with a B.A. in music and a teaching degree. In the 1930s he moved to New York and was involved with, among other things, the Federal Theatre Project, and Camp Unity in Wingdale, New York. In the early 1940s, he worked in radio with singers and musicians Paul Robeson, Pete Seeger and Burl Ives. He moved to California in 1943 and wrote songs and scores for films. After 1947, he was "graylisted" because of his left-wing political views and no longer received offers to work on films. In 1961, he moved back to New York where he continued to write and collaborate on many songs and perform in concerts. In 1965, he moved to California where he pursued work in films and continued to compose music. His best known compositions are "Joe Hill," "Ballad for Americans," "The House I Live In," and "Black and White."

Accession No. 4240-008: Earl Robinson papers, 1931-1991Return to Top
Scope and Content: Correspondence, music manuscripts and published scores, audio tape recordings, tape recorded interviews, interview transcripts, writings, sheet music, programs, studio master tapes, commercial audio discs, ephemera clippings; 1931-1991.
Much is published and unpublished music scores and related material, and audio recordings of performances and studio sessions, videotape.
This accession consists of papers which were in Robinson's home at the time of his death, and papers which had been deposited at the Southern California Library for Social Studies Research. The SCL material had been partially organized by Gwen Gunderson, while working on a biography of Robinson. Her order was not retained; however, folder headings and other identification were used when available. An alphabetical card catalog, compiled by Gunderson, describes the content of the papers, and often includes background information. The catalog may be found in boxes 32 and 33.
During his lifetime, Earl Robinson was interviewed several times by friends intending to write biographies. Gwen Gunderson, mentioned above in connection with the SCL papers, also interviewed many of Earl Robinson's friends and family for biography which she never finished. Transcripts of all these interviews may be found in box 19. Cassette tapes of most of these interviews are available in box 42.
Robinson also attempted his own autobiography, with the help of Eric Gordon. This remained unpublished at the time of his death. The drafts are found in boxes 19 and 20.
Restrictions on Access: Open to all users, but access to portions of the papers restricted. Contact repository for details.
Custodial History: Part of the material came from Earl Robinson's Seattle house and was donated by his family July 25, 1991, shortly after Robinson's death (acc. no. 4240-3). The rest of the accession was transferred from the Southern California Library for Social Studies Research, Los Angeles, October 29, 1991 (acc. no. 4240-4). The material had been deposited there by Robinson, beginning in the 1970's. The transfer was arranged, at Robinson's request, during the months preceding his death.
Separated Material: Three published songbooks (not by Robinson) and three duplicate copies of Robinson published scores were transferred to the Music Library in 1992 and 1993. Four 78 rpm recordings from the Library of Congress Folk Music Archive were transferred to the Music Library Listening Center July 14, 1993: L.C. 5177, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church; two copies of L.C. 726, Lomax recording, From Prisons in Arkansas and Virginia; and L.C. 187, Convicts from Texas & portions of Service in Western Tennessee. Published scores of Handel's Messiah and Beethoven's Symphonies were sent to Gifts Processing Nov. 19, 1992. Duplicate copies of Song of Atlantis and parts for In nunlangstschon entschwundner Vergangenheit were discarded June 1993.
Acquisition Info: Acc no. 4240-3 Robinson Family, 7/25/91; Acc. no. 4240-4 Robinson and Southern California Library, Los Angeles, gift and partial purchase, 6/26/91; Acc. no. 4240-7 James R. Robinson, 12/16/91; Ernie Harburg interview of Robinson, gift, The Harburg Foundation, NYC, 1992, July 25, 1991
Processing Info: During processing, all non-music papers were separated from musical compositions and recordings. All correspondence was removed from files in other record series, given the original folder name, and placed with the rest of the correspondence. Correspondence has been alphabetized, but correspondents listed only selectively.
The recordings and compositons have been fully processed. The compositions are grouped by form. Scores, unless otherwise indicated on the inventory, are unpublished manuscripts. If a composition is described by title only, it may be assumed that only music manuscripts are present. The Chicago Manual of Style rules were followed in punctuating composition titles. Material relating to specific Robinson compositions, including correspondence, clippings and programs, are grouped with the scores in the compositions series. Numerous oversized scores are boxed separately from scores which fit in standard cartons, so box numbers frequently switch from box to box on the inventory. Deteriorating photocopies were recopied and discarded. In several instances, user copies were made of deteriorating manuscript material. More complete information about Robinson's tape recordings may be found on identification forms inside the tape boxes. Performers, dates, etc. were noted when known
Processing Info: Approximately 500 photographs and 17 slides were transferred to the Photograph Collection in the Division March 17, 1993
A selection from the books and records in Robinson's house was incorporated into this accession. The rest were offered to other Library units. The books and records selected for inclusion in these papers fit the following criteria: recordings or publications of Robinson compositions; annotated, or author-inscribed; related to or possibly used as research in his compositions; by or about friends of Robinson. A few items were included because they reflected particular interests of Robinson.
