Verle G. Kaiser was born in 1911. At the age of eleven, Kaiser and his family migrated from North Dakota to a dairy farm near Cheney, Washington. In 1933, he received a B.S. degree in Agriculture from Washington State College (now Washington State University) in Pullman, Washington. He also earned a degree in Engineering in 1934, while working for the Soil Erosion Service (later the Soil Conservation Service), a unit of the United States Department of Agriculture. Kaiser worked as an agronomist and conservationist in western Washington and northern Idaho. In 1955, he became the Agronomy Specialist for Washington, Idaho, and Oregon.

Kaiser was best known for his expertise in conservation problems in the Palouse. His articles appeared in Northwest Science, in Journal of Soil and Water Conservation, and he contributed to technical bulletins from agricultural experiment stations in the Pacific Northwest. Kaiser's work for the Soil Conservation Service has been incorporated in technical guides and conservation handbooks for the Palouse area. Before and after his retirement in 1972, Kaiser undertook consulting assignments for the Development and Resources Corporation in Iran, Nicaragua, and Columbia. He also campaigned to have the United States Department of Agriculture adjust its programs to meet the conservation needs of the Columbia Plateau region. Kaiser died in Spokane County, Washington, in 1982.

This collection contains personal and professional papers of Verle G. Kaiser. The collection primarily consists of index cards for Kaiser's book collection, desk calendars and a research journal, as well as hunting and fishing diaries, photographs, newspaper clippings, and memorabilia. The collection also contains copies of publications by Kaiser, and related materials.

Preliminary Inventory:

Box 1: Research journal with hunting and fishing diaries, including photographs, newspaper clippings, and memorabilia (1932-1962).

Box 2: Desk calendars (1942-1960), documentation of donations from the Kaiser family (1985-1987), index cards for Kaiser's book collection, and a manuscript map.

Box 3: Publications by Kaiser, and related materials (1956-1983); index cards for Kaiser's professional book collection, and a small collection of personal papers of Mildred Kaiser.
