Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Scharhon’s Kosher Market was opened by Morris Bezalel Scharhon after the demand for his home-run kosher butchering service grew. Morris (Moshe) was the Shochet (butcher), but he had his three sons, Azaria, Lazar, and Victor, run the store for him. The shop opened around 1940 at 2117 Jackson St., Seattle, Washington. It was purchased from Mrs. Winograd. During World War II, Azaria and Lazar left Victor and their sisters to run the store while they served overseas. Victor had apprenticed as a printer and ran a printing business from the Market. After the war, Azaria and Lazar came back to work at the Market. Around 1947, they purchased an adjacent building for the printing business.
