Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Ida Flagler Daly was a leader and activist in Seattle, dedicated to improving conditions for the handicapped. Born in Lime Springs, Iowa in 1901, she was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at a young age. She was on the Board of Directors for the Seattle Handicapped Club, which founded the Seattle Handicapped Center in 1957. The Handicapped Center served as a community hub, offering job training, craft classes, dance lessons, sports, and social services. Daly was the director of the Seattle Handicapped Center in the 1950s and 1960s and edited its monthly newsletters, "The Good Samaritan," and its successor, "The Progress."

Daly also campaigned for wheelchair-accessible housing, resulting in construction of the Center Park Apartments, a complex designed specifically to accommodate people with disabilities. In 1969 she began working as a Management Aide for the apartments. She traveled to New York to speak at the 47th annual session of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine as a guest speaker on accessible housing. Her hard work was recognized on the local and national stage: she received the Certificate of Distinguished Service to the Community from the Seattle Chamber of Commerce (1965), the National Award from the President's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped, Woman of Achievement (1968), Quadriplegic of the Year, Washington State's Handicapped American of the Year, and a citation for service to the Muscular Dystrophy Association of America.

Daly chronicled her life in Adventures in a Wheelchair in 1973. She died in Seattle in 1985.
