Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Cloud and Aerosol Research Group (CARG) in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, University of Washington, is concerned with three broad areas of research: atmospheric aerosols and trace gases, the physics and chemistry of clouds and precipitation, and mesoscale processes associated with cloud and precipitation systems. Current studies are rooted in field observations; however, conceptual and numerical model development has been included in the recent studies, such as the IMPROVE Project, which involves the analysis of a large data set on the structure of clouds in the Pacific Northwest with the goal of improving the representation of cloud and precipitation processes in mesoscale models. CARG was founded by Professor Peter V. Hobbs in 1963. In the early 1960s, the research work of the CARG revolved around laboratory and theoretical studies of cloud processes. In the late 1960s the CARG started to do ground-based field studies including measurements from a field station on Mt. Olympus in the Olympic National Park, Washington. In 1970 CARG obtained its first research aircraft; at the end of 2001, the CARG closed down its aircraft program in order to concentrate its efforts on analyses of the large amounts of airborne data it has collected.
