Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
The Spanish-American war ended on December 12, 1898 with the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty gave occupation of Cuba to the United States, as well as ceding Guam, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico from Spanish rule to the United States.
The United States openly occupied Cuba from 1898 until the Platt Amendment was incorporated into the Cuban Constitution in 1902. Afterwards, Cuba became a nominally independent country, but the United States retained the power to intervene in Cuban affairs. This covert governance continued for thirty years until the Cuban revolution of 1959 which ended American control in Cuba.
