Biographical Note

University of Washington Professor of International Studies Eleanor Martha Hadley was born in 1916. She received a B.A. in Politics, Economics and Philosophy from Mills College in 1938, and studied the Japanese language in Tokyo from 1938 to 1940. She began a doctoral program in Economics at Radcliffe College in 1941, but upon finishing her course work requirements she joined the Office of Strategic Services, Far East Branch, and then a year later joined the State Department. She participated in drafting the economic portion of the Basic Directive, General MacArthur's guide to policy during the Occupation of Japan. In the spring of 1946 she joined MacArthur's staff in Tokyo where she worked on antitrust matters and the economic purge. She completed her doctorate in 1949 and eventually served on the faculties of Smith College, George Washington University, and the University of Washington, where she taught Japan Studies in the Jackson School of International Studies from 1986 to 1989. She died in 2007.
