Historical NoteReturn to Top
The organization was established as the Central Association of Seattle to coordinate private and public planning activities and to give a new impetus to the consolidation of regional headquarter functions in a compact, accessible downtown. A joint effort of the City and the Central Association resulted in a comprehensive plan for the central business district published in 1963. In 1973 the name changed to the Downtown Seattle Development Association, and the name of the Promotion Division is now the Business Promotion Division. This change was made for easier public recognition and a more accurate description of the role the organization plays in the community. In 1989 the name changed again to the Downtown Seattle Association.
