Carl August Darmer was born on July 19, 1858 in Stralsund, Germany, the son of Edward and Martha Darmer. He immigrated to America in 1880. First settling in San Francisco, California, he relocated permanently to Tacoma, Washington, where he established himself as an architect (one of only four listed in the 1900 Polk City Directory) working between 1880 and the early 1900s. He married German-born Sophie C. Darmer in 1885, and they had two surviving children, Edwill and Margarett. Darmer died on February 23, 1952, aged 93.
