Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

In 1935, Union Pacific Railroad Chairman W. Averell Harriman looked for a way to increase rail passenger traffic to the West. Alpine skiing had gained popularity since the 1932 Lake Placid Winter Olympics, so Harriman employed Count Felix Schaffgotsch to search America for the finest spot on which to build a destination ski resort. The Count discovered the area near Ketchum, Idaho, and within days Harriman purchased the 3,888-acre Brass Ranch that would become Sun Valley. The luxurious resort, along with its million-dollar lodge, was opened to the public in the winter of 1936. The world's first chairlifts, designed by a Union Pacific engineer, were installed on the resort's Proctor and Dollar Mountains in the fall of 1936. Sun Valley was also the first resort to offer ski lessons.
