The journal consists only of several pages of entries dated from June 22, 1853, to June 27, 1853; the remainder of the book is blank. The entries describe Hoyt's journey by ship from San Francisco, California, up the Pacific Coast and the Columbia River to Vancouver, Washington. They describe his impressions of the landscape and settlements on the trip, including Astoria, Oregon, and Fort Vancouver.
