Historical NoteReturn to Top
The khaen is a free-reed mouth instrument that originated in Laos and Northeastern Thailand. It consists of two rows of bamboo pipes that are attached to a wooden windchest. There can be anywhere between 6 and 18 pipes, but 16 pipes is the most common arrangement. The instrument is polyphonic and can be played by both blowing air in and drawing air out. Traditional genres of khaen music are still performed, but today they are often overshadowed by newer folk-pop fusions.
