Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Professor of Biological Structure, University of Washington School of Medicine.

Edward Allen Boyden was born 1886. He was a member of the faculty of Harvard Medical School and the University of Illinois School of Medicine. He helped start a medical school at the University of Alabama by reorganzing the school's department of anatomy. He was chairman of the department of anatomy at the University of Minnesota until his retirement in 1954. Boyden mapped the common pattern of the segmental bronchi and their branches, as well as the pulmonary arteries and veins, which assisted surgeons greatly in performing segmental resection of the lung. He developed the concept of gallbladder function and studied the anatomy of the common duct sphincters. In 1974 Dr. Boyden was named an honorary member of the International College of Surgeons in recognition of his work on the anatomy and physiology of the biliary tract and structure and development of the lung. That year he was also honored for 50 years of membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Boyden received the Modern Medicine Achievement Award in 1960, elected an Honorary Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians in 1961, and in 1970 became the first recipient of the Henry Gray Award of the American Association of Anatomists. He died in 1976 at the age of 90.

Biographical features (awards, certificates, etc.), correspondence, 1956-1976; conference and convention records, notes, subject files, medical illustrations and photos, reprints.

The papers in this accession reflect the research interests and activities of Dr. Boyden in his role as Research Professor in Biological Structure at the University of Washington School of Medicine (1954-1976). It is important to note, however, that Boyden had an earlier career as Professor and Head of the Anatomy Department at the University of Minnesota (1931-1954). His activities at that institution are not reflected in this accession, except by virtue of the fact that his research interests may have had a continuity that spanned both careers.
