Hazel Mae O'Brien Studenicka was born in Dufur, Oregon, in 1910 to Richard Ferris and Edith Moore O'Brien. In 1934, she married Lloyd R. Studenicka, with whom she had three daughters and one son. In 1942, she moved to Portland, Oregon, where she worked as a catalog stock clerk for Montgomery Ward from the early 1950s until 1975, when she retired. Studenicka died in November 1999, and was buried in the International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery in The Dalles, Oregon.

The collection consists of two bound volumes containing photocopies of letters that Hazel Mae O'Brien Studenicka sent to her family and friends from 1985 to 1993. Her correspondence often also included newspaper clippings, newspaper cartoons, and writings and letters that Studenicka had composed at earlier dates. The collection includes some letters that Studenicka received from her grandchildren. The second volume includes documentation relating to genealogy, namely concerning the families of Studenicka's ancestors William Lloyd O'Brien and Richard Ferris O'Brien.
