Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Douglas (sometimes spelled Douglass) Tancred was born on the island of Bermuda in 1870 to parents Douglas and Amelia (Wilson) Tancred. The Tancred family moved to Boston, Massachussets while Douglas was still an infant. In 1890, Douglas moved to San Francisco and thereafter was a purser on vessels plying between San Diego and Alaskan ports--possibly with the Pacific Coast Steamship Company. After a few years, he retired from the seafaring life and married Miss Mattie H. Hixson. In 1902 the couple founded a poultry farm on two acres of land in Kent, Washington. There the Tancreds pioneered the practice of trapnesting and bred a now famous Tancred strain of white Leghorn chickens. Douglas Tancred died on May 18, 1923 in Kent, Washington at age 53.
