Historical NoteReturn to Top
James John Brophy was born on 6 June 1926 in Chicago to James J. and Ella Nerad Brophy. He married Muriel Johnson in 1949. He received his B.S. in electrical engineering (1947), his masters in science and electrical engineering (1949), and his Ph.D. in physics (1951) all from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Brophy was a researcher in solid state physics and wrote many papers and publications on the subject. He served as vice president for research at the University of Utah from 1980 to 1991.
