Accession No. 2452-001: Ida Seitzick Shapiro oral history interview, 1975Return to Top

Scope and Content: Tape-recorded interview conducted by Meta Kaplan, covering 1934-1936, May 4, 1975. Also, "Interviewer's notes of 2nd unrecorded interview."

Mrs. Shapiro discusses the early days of the Kline Galland Home, the scope of the Settlement House and her personal experiences. She gives an informative history and commentary on Council's Vocational Scholarship project, including names of the founders, and she discusses the Junior Council. She tells of helping Jews who arrived from Europe via Vladisvostock and were detained in Seattle until they could be welcomed by other communities. Mrs. Shapiro tells of the cohesiveness in the coummunity by having an all city gathering of Council in the Temple Center wirh orthodox, conservative and reform Rabbis present created esprit de corps and increased council membership. She also discusses the national convention held in New Orleans in 1935.
