Content DescriptionReturn to Top
Collection contains two large giclee prints of school completion certificates from the Hebrew School in Rhodes and a collected family history including translated correspondence and other documents from the 1930s.
Clara Barki (later changed to Claire Barkey in the United States) received two certificates from the Scuole Israelitiche Italiane in Rhodes, one in 1932 and one in 1934, when she was 11 and 13 years old. The documents are believed to be two of the few, if any, that remain after the Jews were expelled from Rhodes prior to the Nazi invasion in 1944. The Flash family believes that Clara Barki carried these with her when her family of three adults and six children was expelled from Rhodes in 1939. The family sought refuge in Tangier, Morocco, for seven years, before migrating to Seattle in 1946. The original documents were found in the home of Claire Barkey Flash (1921-1991) and her husband Phil Flash (1918-) in Mercer Island, Wash.
Claire Barkey Flash and her daughter Cynthia Flash Hemphill created a bound family history including translated correspondence and other documents from their family history, documenting the family's journey from Rhodes to Seattle. She would go on to publish this as A Hug from Afar: One Family's Dramatic Journey through Three Continents to Escape the Holocaust.
