John Osseward Papers, 1916-1983

Scope and Content: Accession no. 3818-1 has been arranged primarily according to the organizations with which Osseward was involved. Records are most voluminous for Olympic Park Associates, the Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs, the Mountaineers, the National Parks Association, the North Cascades Conservation Council, the Sierra Club, the Wilderness Bill Coordinating Committee, and the Wilderness Society. Researchers should note that information about a single topic or issue, such as the Wilderness Bill or the North Cascades, can be found scattered throughout the records of the various organizations that were concerned with it. The accession also includes Osseward's personal papers resulting from activities not affiliated with any organization in particular. Personal papers include correspondence, clippings, and a large subject series on conservation issues. Osseward was not consistent in his filing practices, and similar subject matter may be found under multiple file headings. Major correspondents in the accession include the U.S. National Park Service, Polly Dyer, Philip H. Zalesky, Patrick D. Goldsworthy, Leo Gallagher, and Brock Evans.
