Archibald Gardner was born in Scotland in 1815. After moving to Canada in 1822, his family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When community trouble arose, the family moved to Nauvoo, Illinois. Later they traveled to Salt Lake City.

The Archibald Gardner diary (1800s) consist of a typewritten transcription of Archibald Gardner's (1815-1857) short diary (14 pages). The diary gives an extensive genealogy of the Gardner family and their Scottish origins. Although brief, this account describes the daily trials and experiences of the early 1800s. The diary has been transcribed with its original grammar and spelling intact.
