Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Captain Joseph Kellogg (1812-1903) was a millwright, shipbuilder and promoter who was born in Canada. He came to Oregon via ocean route in 1848, and after locating a claim beside Lot Whitcomb, he helped found the town of Milwaukie, Oregon. In partnership with Whitcomb and William Torrence, he was one of a firm that built the river schooner Lot Whitcomb and other craft and constructed a local mill. He built Standard Flour Mills at Milwaukie. He became a member of People's Transportation Company. In 1870, he helped form the Willamette Transportation Company. Soon after, he sold his interests in the company and formed the Joseph Kellogg Transportation Company.
