Accession No. 2880-003: Oral history interview with Lilly DeJaen, 2002Return to Top
Scope and Content: Lilly DeJaen, born into a Sephardic family in Seattle, recalls her life in the central district. She speaks of her family background and explains the character of the neighborhood.
There are detailed descriptions of her elementary school, high school, cliques and coffee klatches, the library and its community functions, and Bikur Holim Synagogue. She recalls her own home and her kitchen, which is carefully described. We hear about neighborhood shops, Seligs lines, Fuxon's dry goods stores, Rhodes department store, Mr. Albert Adatto, the tailor, Weed's pharmacy, Lulu Chinn, the hemstitch lady, and every aspect of her life in the community.
Lilly stresses the idea of community and speaks of her poignant memories of Japanese evictions during WWII, and ends with the changes after that war.
