Biographical NoteReturn to Top

The Couch-Derickson collection hosts members of the Couch family, which eventually grew to encompass accompanying surnames of Derickson, Kurtz, and Haslam. Central members include Laura (Wheeler) Couch, Emma (Couch) Derickson, and Laura (Couch) Kurtz. The majority of photographs and tintypes in the collection were made by studios in Chicago, Illinois, and the family developed strong ties throughout the Midwest, which are evidenced by the locales of friends and subsequent generations.

Laura (Wheeler) CouchReturn to Top

Laura Wheeler was born in New York circa 1823 and married Oliver Couch. The two had three children: Theodore (b. 1844), Emma (b. 1849), and Mary (b. 1856).

Emma B. Couch was born in New York circa 1849 to Oliver and Laura (Wheeler) Couch. She married John L. Derickson in 1868 in Cook Co., Illinois, and the two had at least three children: Laura (b. 1872), Lucy (b. 1881), and George (b. 1885).
