Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Flaming Gorge Dam photograph collection consists of black and white prints of photographs taken by the US Bureau of Reclamation during the construction of Flaming Gorge Dam on the Green River. Each one is stamped "Photograph by Bureau of Reclamation, Region 4," which was headquartered in Salt Lake City. The photos depict several aspects of the construction of the dam, such as the building of the diversion tunnels, building the power plant access road, and blasting at the dam site. Some have detailed captions with the date the photograph was taken, the photographer, and other data, while others have no information attached to them. The captions will be reproduced in the inventory surrounded by quotes, thus: "__," while descriptions of those without captions will be enclosed in brackets, thus: [__]. Construction of Flaming Gorge Dam, sited in the center of Red Canyon on the Green River in northeastern Utah, was begun in 1957. The dam was completed in 1963. A town for the workers and Bureau of Reclamation employees was constructed immediately north of the dam site on Dutch John Flat, and was later named Dutch John, Utah.
