Historical NoteReturn to Top

Donald A. Ritter was born on July 24, 1908 in Fairbury, Nebraska where he also spent his childhood. He attended the University of Wyoming from 1931-1935 and graduated with a B.S. in Agriculture. After school, Ritter became the Extension Soil Conservationist for the University of Wyoming and was responsible for the educational program for soil conservation. Ritter enlisted in the United States Army in 1941 and served in both the African and European theaters of the Second World War, where, among other things, he was charged with helping repatriate the bodies of fallen service men from Hungary to the U.S. After being honorably discharged in 1946, he worked for a number of federal government agencies including the U.S. Bureau of Reclamations, U.S. Foreign Operation Administration, and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). His work focused on research and technical agricultural assistance in countries around the world including Pakistan, Bolivia, Philippines, Sudan, Ethiopia, and other places. Ritter retired in 1965.
