Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Frank A. Woessner was born in 1898 in North Dakota. He received a B.A. from New York University and was a student at Lexington Art School as well as studying under Callahn & Elshin. He was a stockbroker on Wall Street and a hobbyist painter before coming to Seattle. Frank and his wife, Henriette, built their gallery on Alki to provide a cultural center where artists could show their work. While they were building the gallery, they lived in a shack; the details of this story are given in an article in "Seattle Times Magazine," July 19, 1953. The Woessner Gallery opened June 21, 1953. It exhibited Kenneth Callahan's first one-man show in Seattle. Frank was also a photographer. He died in 1973.
