Biographical NoteReturn to Top

J. Cecil Alter was born in Rensselaer, Indiana, on March 31, 1879. He completed his education in Indiana, attending Valparaiso University, Northern Indiana Teachers' Institute, and Purdue University. Alter was a well-known Utah historian and author who wrote James Bridger (1925), Through the Heart of the Scenic West (1927), Storied Domain (1932), and Early Utah Journalism (1938). He worked for the Salt Lake Weather Bureau in Salt Lake City from 1917 to 1941, during which he recorded the radio programs included in this collection. Alter left Salt Lake City to accept a similar position in Cincinnati, Ohio, from which he retired in 1949. He passed away in Los Angeles, California, in May 1964.
