Leonard H. McMahan (1866-1957) was a newspaper editor and lawyer. He founded and edited the Woodburn, Oregon, Independent, 1888-1892. He was active in the Populist, Free Silver and Progressive Parties in Oregon.

The collection contains correspondence, speeches, legal papers, Public Service Commission papers, State Corporation Commission papers, and Travel Expense Claims of the Attorney General's Office.

The correspondence is divided between letters received and letters sent. Received correspondence is alphabetically organized by senders name or title. Outgoing correspondence is organized by date, 1890-1949.

Major correspondents are: Timothy W. Davenport, Francis J. Heney, Harry Lane, Margaret Mitchell, Thomas B. Neuhausen, William S. U'Ren, John B. Waldo, John C. Young.

Also included are speeches and notes, legal papers and documents from state commissions.
