Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Skanner newspaper serves the African-American community in Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington. Bernie Foster founded the newspaper in 1975 and continues to serve as its publisher. His wife, Bobbie Dore Foster, began her work as editor in the 1980s. The paper played a significant role in the campaign to change Union Avenue's name to Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in the 1990s. Each January, it pays tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and releases a special Black History edition each February. Other annual special editions include a Career Guide in May, and the Minority Business Enterprise and Fire Prevention Week issues in October.

From 1990 to 2014, the Skanner published separate Portland and Seattle editions, but began to publish a single edition serving the Pacific Northwest in 2014. The Skanner News Group also includes the non-profit organization The Skanner Foundation, which provides scholarships and technological training.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The photographs in this collection primarily relate to people and events in the African-American community in the Pacific Northwest, although some pertain to national and international events. Photographers represented include Susan Fried, Dean Guernsey, Julie Keefe and Monica Uhr. Individuals represented in this collection include Dick Bogle, Alcena Boozer, JoAnn Bowman, Margaret Carter, Bill Clinton, Mercedes Deiz, Bernie and Bobbie Dore Foster, Avel Gordly, Michael ("Chappie") Grice, Ron Herndon, Benjamin Hooks, Tony Hopson, Bill and Gladys McCoy, Charles Moose, Darryl Tukufu, and multiple Portland mayors, Oregon governors and members of US Congress. Community organizations and events depicted include the Urban League of Portland, the 1978 National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) convention held in Portland, Self Enhancement, Inc.
