Ernest S. Bradford was an American economist who authored several books on marketing research and municipal government in the early twentieth century, including Bradford's Directory of Marketing Research Agencies.
He was born Ernest Bradford Smith in Moorehead, Minnesota. As a young man, he was active in Christian Endeavor work, and collected for Youth's Companion.
Bradford was forced to leave the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he was enrolled as a student, due to illness in 1899, and began to travel to warmer climates to improve his health. Between 1900 and 1902, he went to Biloxi, Mississippi, Phoenix, Arizona, and Los Angeles, California. He returned Madison in September 1902, and worked as a bookkeeper in his father's real estate business.
In 1904, he returned to the University of Wisconsin, where he finished a degree in political science. In 1906, he took an assistantship in political science at the University of Pennsylvania. He changed his name from Smith to Bradford at this time.
In 1907 he joined the US Department of Commerce as an economist and statistician. He was trade survey director of the Tanners' Council (1923-1927), and director of the Bureau of Business Research, City College of New York (1930-1947).
Ernest S. Bradford died in 1965.

The early volumes of Bradford's diaries, beginning with his junior year at the University of Wisconsin, are detailed accounts of his schooling, travels, teaching experiences, business ventures, and social life. Later diaries are less informative, except as they indicate that a busy and successful man may lead a normal, dull life. One volume in the collection is the 1915 diary of Florence Mott Bradford.
