The Civilian Conservation Corps was established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933 as part of the New Deal. Camps were established across the United States with 26 of them in Montana. The Civilian Conservation Corps camp at Graves Creek is located 30 miles west of Missoula, Montana, near Lolo Creek on the Lolo National Forest. The workers constructed fire towers and roads, planted trees, fought forest fires and worked on other conservation oriented projects.
