The purpose of this organization was to raise money for books to create an American history collection at the University of Washington Libraries in commemoration of Frederic James Grant, a Seattle, Washington pioneer. Grant Was born Aug. 17 1862, and graduated from Lafayette college in 1883. He chose to seek his fortune in Seattle and obtained a job at the Seattle Post- Intelligencer shortly after arriving. He eventually became Editor in Chief. He served as a member of the first Washington State Legislature and later was appointed as an envoy to Bolivia by President Harrison. Grant died when the ship (the Ivanhoe) on which he was traveling sank on 9/30/1894.
