Historical NoteReturn to Top
Bertram Wilson Huffman (1870-1953) was born in Summerville, Union County, Oregon. He worked on his father's ranch, and attended school in Union. Early in life he displayed a talent for writing.
He became a writer and poet; many of his poems, essays, and articles were published in Eastern Oregon newspapers, particularly the Oregon Scout and the LaGrande Journal. In time, he was dubbed the "Poet Laureate" of Grande Ronde Valley.
In 1893, he drove a band of horses to the Cherokee strip, sold them, and stayed in that country for three years. He later returned to Eastern Oregon and became a railway fireman, joined the Knights of Labor, and wrote articles favoring Populism.
From 1902-1908, he was editor of the East Oregonian, in Pendleton. He then went to Alberta, Canada, and later moved to British Columbia. In both places he farmed, and wrote articles and poems for newspapers and magazines.
