Historical NoteReturn to Top

"Prior to the fall of 1982, there was no formal ESL program on Whitworth campus. For several years, Eunice Johnston in Church Relations had taught one ESL course per semester to whichever international students seemed to be in need of supplementary language instruction. There was no testing to determine language level or placement.

In the early summer of 1984 the decision was made to have Whitworth establish its own two-level English Language Program to serve international students who wished to matriculate into the college but still needed additional language skills to meet the proficiency requirement for admission. A search was made and Janet Yoder was hired as the program's director/instructor." (The English Language Program (History))
