Biographical Note

Paul Brownell (ca. 1911-December 17, 1992) was born in Seattle to a musical family. He attended Roosevelt High School where he was a band member and orchestra, playing violin, viola, piccolo and flute. He joined the UW marching band and played the piccolo for six years before graduating in 1933 with a degree in education. (Mrs. Brownell said that Paul wanted to get a degree in music but during the Depression, he was unable to afford the private lessons required for the major.) He began teaching choral music at Blaine High School in Whatcom County a year after his graduation. He completed a masters degree in journalism at UW and taught orchestra, band, history, and journalism at Blaine High School eventually becoming the principal before he left the school in 1943. He eventually was hired by the Seattle Public Schools where he worked as a teacher and counselor until his retirement in 1975. He met Mildred Walker in Seattle and they were married in 1963.

Mildred Walker Brownell (January 5, 1925-July 18, 2012) was a graduate of Queen Anne High School, and the UW. She taught math and physics in Seattle Public Schools.
