Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Charles Sanford Skilton was born in 1868 in Northampton, Massachusetts. In 1889, Skilton received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale, becoming the Director of Music at the Salem Academy and College in 1893. From 1903-1915, Skilton was the Dean of the School of Fine Arts at the University of Kansas. In 1915, Skilton was introduced to Native American music by a student. Skilton composed the Suite Primeval, an opera comprised of songs from three tribes, including a Rogue River tribal gambling song. Skilton died in 1941 in Lawrence, Kansas.

The Rogue River Gambling Song Collection contains copies of sheet music of the Rogue River Gambing Song composed by Charles Sanford Skilton for the grand orchestra. The gambling song was part of the second half of the Suite Primeval on Tribal Indian Melodies. The original song was acquired by Skilton from Robert DePoe, a Siletz tribal member teaching music at the Haskell Indian School, circa 1908.
