Container(s): Box 1
In 1906 the YMCA boys' camp moved from Hood Canal to Orcas Island, as guests on waterfront property owned by Laurence J. Coleman. The camp was composed of a cluster of tents around a campfire on the lakeshore and was open to members for only $5/week. Young men participated in organized sports, timed hikes, camp improvement and bible study. This camp was the precursor to Camp Orkila, one of the oldest organized boys' camps in the Pacific Northwest.

From 1899 to 1905, the YMCA sponsored a series of camps along Washington's Hood Canal. In this final year, at Hoodsport WA, there was a strong emphasis on nature study. Thirty young men spent six weeks at the camp, supervised by H.A. Woodcock, educational director of the YMCA. They built a boat and sailed it back to Seattle, along with 93 stuffed animals and birds. KKK refers to Kids Kuntry Club, which was related to the YMCA camps on Hood Canal and Orcas Island.

Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition (album pages 82-86), 1909Return to Top
Container(s): Box 1
The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition was a world's fair held in Seattle in 1909, publicizing the development of the Pacific Northwest. It was originally planned for 1907, to mark the 10th anniversary of the Klondike Gold Rush, but the organizers found out about the Jamestown Exposition being held that year, and rescheduled. The fairgrounds became the campus of the University of Washington. Photos show several AYPE buildings under construction.
