Claude E. Pike (1876-1964) worked in Seattle as a chief clerk for the Emergency Fleet Corporation and later as the District Passenger Agent of the United States Lines of the Shipping Board.
Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
The Metropolitan Theatre opened on October 2, 1911 as a stage house located at 415 University Street. Two years after its opening it began showing movies and alternated between presenting movies and live theater. Its final performance was held on December 4, 1954, and the theater was demolished soon after.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The Claude E. Pike theater scrapbooks were compiled by Pike and volumes 1-4 apparently were presented to the Metropolitan Theatre on October 10, 1953. The collection most likely documents Pike's own theater-going activities and interest in the performing arts. It is comprised of programs and playbill clippings of plays, lists of cast of characters, and photographic portraits of actors and actresses. Many clippings are from theaters across the country from 1895 to 1946, but volumes 2-5 focus primarily on performances from Seattle-area theaters such as the Moore Theatre, the University of Washington Pavilion, and, in particular, the Metropolitan Theatre. Volume 5 also contains movie advertisements at the Metropolitan Theatre from the 1940s to the 1950s.
