Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Danongan Sibay Kalanduyan (1947-) is a musician from the Mindanao region of the southern Philippines. As a child, he learned to play Maguindanao music with an emphasis on the traditions of kulintang. Kulintang is a gong and drum ensemble indigenous to the Sulu and Mindanao islands in the southern Philippines and northern Borneo. A Kulintang, for which the ensembles are named, is a row of 5 to 11 gongs graduated in pitch. In 1976, Kalanduyan was the artist-in-residence for the University of Washington's department of ethnomusicology. Since 1989, he has served as the director of the Filipino Kulintang Center of San Francisco.
