Biographical NoteReturn to Top

James Fitzgerald (1910-1973) and Margaret Tomkins (1916-2002), husband and wife, were artists in the Pacific Northwest, active from 1930's through the 1970's. FitzGerald primarily worked as a bronze sculptor and Tomkins primarily as a painter. Both FitzGerald and Tomkins were active in the "Tobey Circle" in the 1940s.

Scope and Content: Tape-recorded interview conducted by Elise Kelleher.

Tape done for KING-FM "Conversation with an Artist" series. Ms. Tomkins and Mr. FitzGerald, wife and husband artists, also discuss a recent trip to Europe, contrasting a number of ideas and activities between Europe and America (commissions of contemporary works, dealers, the production of contemporary artists, survival of the artist, inspiration, support from community, etc). Mr. FitzGerald also discusses his own work in sculpture from aesthetic and technical viewpoints and describes the 'lost wax' method of casting.
