Thomas M. Hess (1936-2009) was a linguist from Flint, Michigan. He earned his BA from the University of Colorado and his MA and PhD from the University of Washington. His dissertation was on the grammatical structure of the Snohomish dialect of Lushoosheed, a Coast Salish language. During his career, he went on to study languages used by other surrounding tribes of the Puget Sound.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Contents summary: Lushootseed songs, stories, and other spoken material by numerous consultants.

Work tapes made on 11 DATs in February 1999 of the following tapes: #21, 35, 36, 37, 38, 41, 47, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63, 64 (the DAT copy of tape 38 deteriorated and was dumped 10/2003).

The following original tape reels were treated with silicone fluid in February 1999: 35, 36, 37, 38, 41, and 61 (deterioration noted when tapes were being copied for requester; sticky and squealing but not shedding; G.L. wiped silicone fluid along length of each tape; this worked well enough to produce squeal-less copies on DAT)

All tapes digitized and work discs produced (complete 12/2005); tapes re-digitized to archival standard (96 kHz/24-bit) as part of the Grammy Foundation grant project 2009-2010.

Additional copies of some Hess recordings transferred from the Hilbert Collection (2009): 95-19.12-13 - copy 2 (reel (5")); 95-19.15 (copy 2 (reel (5")); 95-19.20 - copy 2 (reel (5")); 95-19.44 - copy 2 (reel (5")); 95-19.73 - copy 2 (reel (5")); 95-19.74 - copy 2 (reel (5")) and copy 3 (cassette).
