Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Austin Douglas Allen was born on March 26, 1914, in Hyrum, Utah, to Austin David and Georgia Allen. After earning his primary and secondary education in Cache Valley, he received a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Utah State Agricultural College (now Utah State University) in 1938. Allen was employed as a civil engineer with the Utah State Road Commission, the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation, Geneva Steel Company, and Thiokol Chemical Corporation, and he also ran a dry wheat farm and poultry operation in Hansel Valley, Box Elder County. An active member of the Hyrum, Utah City Council from the 1950s to the late 1990s, Allen was involved with the community's water system upgrade. He died on September 4, 2006.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Boxes 1-6 are divided into two main parts: The first contains receipts, bank notes, and weather reports related to Allen's dry farm, while the second consists of meeting agendas, correspondence, and reports from Allen's service on the Hyrum City Council. Boxes 7-11 are additional files pertaining to Allen's dry farm found after the collection was originally processed.

Of particular note in the Hyrum materials are papers related to the city's new pressure irrigation system. The folders in each section are arranged chronologically and are labeled as Allen had titled them.
