Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Beatrice Terry (1890-1970) was a member of an illustrious British acting family. Her aunt was the famous Ellen Terry. Much of Beatrice Terry's career took place in the United States, where she was an original member of Eva Le Gallienne's Civic Repertory Theatre in New York. Terry also acted with such actresses as Ethel Barrymore and Laurette Taylor. Beatrice Terry married Geoffrey Marks and lived in the Seattle area until her death.

Custodial History

No information about the donor is known; however, it is probable that these photographs were originally given to the UW Drama Library by Beatrice Terry or her family, and at some point were transferred to Special Collections. The photograph collection was not part of the collection of Beatrice Terry's personal papers.

Mrs. Gladys Wallis Insull was married to utility tycoon Samuel Insull, who was one of the founders of Edison General Electric. Mrs. Insull appeared in this production of The School for Scandalin 1925, as part of a charity fundraising endeavor. Her performance and subsequent reviews are said to have been one of the inspirations for the character Susan Alexander in the film Citizen Kane.
