Rhodes scholar and professor of English, University of Washington.
Joel M. Johanson graduated from the Universtiy of Washington in 1904. He was the first Rhodes scholar from Washington, 1904-1907. He taught German at the University of Washington from 1908-1910, when he was appointed a professor of English. He died in 1919.

Scope and Content: Lecture notes, scrapbooks (3 volumes); 1900 -1920 (bulk ca. 1904-1907).
Scrapbooks concern his activities as first Rhodes Scholar from Washington state, including voyage to England, activities at University of Oxford, and travels in Austria, France, Germany and Switzerland. Lecture notes concern his career as professor of English, University of Washington; ca. 1910-1919.
